What is Trauma and How Can We Heal It? • Angelica Horvatic

In Wikipedia we can read: “ In psychology, TRAUMA is a type of damage to the psyche that occurs as a result of a severely distressing event. “

Trauma is the main thing preventing us from living a healthy and happy life. It is an experience that was extremely stressful or unpleasant for us and where we felt a loss of control. The memory and the feeling of that experience stays with us when the trauma cycle hasn’t been completed, so the stress which has caused the trauma stays within the body. Trauma is something that happened which caused us so much of the pain and distress that we simply can’t let go of it.

Each of us experience trauma in a different way. What’s traumatic for one person, it can mean nothing to another person. How we respond to trauma depends on our biological make up, our physical, mental and emotional threshold, how we are responding to our environment.

Trauma isn’t always related to an obvious tragedy ( like war, car crash, sexual abuse, loss of loved one ). Coming to this world as a newborn, baby weaning, the birth of a younger brother / sister etc. – those are all examples of traumatic events in our childhood.

Even the best parents are not able to raise a child in a way that the child will experience no trauma.

While in the wildlife, animals can simply shake their trauma off, we as humans unfortunately don’t have this ability.

In our early years we try to release trauma by crying. And that’s actually the best way to complete, resolve and integrate the trauma cycle. But because we as children are punished or shamed for crying, our body very quickly gets a message: “It’s NOT OK for me to feel this, it’s not safe for me to respond and integrate the trauma I am experiencing right now”.

So what do we do?

We suppress, dissociate or numb ourselves to feel SAFE.

And because that same traumatic experience stays stored INSIDE of us, it then starts to work like a magnet in our adulthood.

And despite of our regular spiritual practices and positive focus exercises, we ‘somehow’ end up attracting similar negative experiences over and over again…

We are indeed just re-experiencing the same unresolved trauma cycle that stayed within us from our early childhood.

It channels through us via TRIGGERS – strong emotional reactions – an emotional responses which actually just mirror our previous trauma to us.

Unsatisfying or painful life full of grief, hurt, anger, hate, fear, sadness, loneliness, emptiness, powerlessness, self-hate, unworthiness, guilt and shame

Our main question in working with the trauma symptoms should be: “What Happened to me? “ ( instead of “What’s wrong with me?” )

Once we are committed to our healing journey, I suggest finding trauma recovery specialist we resonate the most with.

Our Mature Approach and Commitment here are CRUCIAL.

I often compare healing work with going to the gym.

Can we get a six pack in one gym session? Of course NOT.

Similarly – no one can miraculously perform emotional healing in one-off trauma trips for us!

From my experience, I can also strongly suggest alternative approach to trauma healing, where it’s all about dealing with the ROOT of our main problem in life.

Psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists I have worked with so far are rapidly transiting into alternative field.

They often compared to me results in ONE SESSION of alternative trauma healing to – YEARS – spent in regular therapy, where people are allowed to only TALK about their trauma and not to dive INTO it.

As emotional trauma healing modalities are mostly about FEELING – everything, from bodily sensations, feelings to emotions ( and not thinking, analyzing and talking ), I highly recommend to work ONLY with the practitioner for who we FEEL is the right person for us. That’s actually already a great ‘feeling’ practice, an overture for our healing work ahead.

Also – one important thing to pay attention when we are choosing the healing modality and person we work with is – a structure of the sessions we are paying for.

There Can Be NO TIME Structure In Emotional Trauma Healing – simply because WE CANNOT TIME OUR EMOTIONS.

This type of work is often compared to a baby delivery where one simply cannot predict what’s really going to happen.

Emotional trauma healing technique I have been working with thousands of people from all over the world is called Completion Process.

It has been developed by American spiritual luminary and author Teal Swan.

For me that technique is the strongest, fastest, deepest, most powerful and efficient tool I have worked with so far.

I wish it was around for me 20 years ago ?

Don’t take my word for it. Please read what my clients have said about Completion Process technique:

Main 5 steps of Completion Process are:

  • Creation of a Safe Haven—setting up a mental place where it’s safe to re-enter a painful memory
  • Validation—giving the painful emotion the message that we see it as valid
  • Seeking origin—asking, “When was the first time I felt this feeling?” to connect to the root of the trauma
  • Release of negative emotion and Awaiting Relief—inside the memory
  • Purification and Healing—a ritual for closing the memory of trauma and beginning a “new life”
